Abstract

751,601. Drawing. FIELDING & PLATT, Ltd. June 3, 1952 [April 10, 1951], No. 8323/51. Class 83 (4). A hydraulically - operated apparatus, particularly a draw-bench or push-bench for the hot or cold working of metals, comprises a working cross head 10 operated by at least two hydraulic ram-containing cylinders 5, 9 disposed longitudinally behind each other and so connected together that the working stroke of the crosshead 10 is the sum of the respective strokes between the ram and the cylinder of each ram-containing cylinder. A hydraulically-operated tube drawbench has a fixed end member 3 and a fixed ring bed 4 connected by tie rods 1, 2. A hydraulic cylinder 5 mounted on the end 3 and a fixed support 6, has a hollow ram 17 connected to a movable crosshead 7 which carries on its opposite face a second coaxial cylinder 9 secured to another movable crosshead 8 and having a ram 18 connected to the working crosshead 10; the latter may carry a tool or means for gripping a workpiece. The two ram cylinders 5, 9 are in communication and pressure liquid supplied thereto through the end 3 causes the ram 17 to move the crosshead 7 and cylinder 9, and the ram 18 to move the crosshead 10 relative to its cylinder whereby the stroke of the crosshead 10 is twice that of the crosshead 7. These two crossheads are also connected by a rack and pinion mechanism 29-30, Figs. 2, 4 (not shown), which causes them to have a movement ratio of two to one. A pair of hydraulic cylinders 22 disposed one above and one below the cylinder 9 are connected to the crosshead 7 which also carries a further pair of cylinders 11 slidable on the tie rods 1, 2 which form stationary rams. These cylinders 11, 22 affect the retraction stroke of the crosshead 10. The draw-bench may have more than two main rams and pairs of rams may be arranged in parallel to give increased power.
