Abstract

1,205,601. Hydraulic presses. FIELDING & PLATT Ltd. 11 June, 1968 [13 June, 1967; 11 Aug., 1967], Nos. 27148/67 and 37044/67. Heading B5F. [Also in Division B3] An hydraulic press comprises a mandrel 14 attached to a crosshead 12 the working stroke of which is effected by two pairs of hydraulic cylinders 4, 8 (only one of each pair is shown), the cylinders of each pair being mechanically connected in series. The sum of the length of the strokes of the said cylinders is equal to the total working stroke of the mandrel. The billet 18 is pushed through a series of dies 3 to form a metal bottle (19) (Fig. 2, not shown). The press is operated by introducing working fluid at 15 and the effective areas of pistons 5 and 10 are arranged such that piston 10 moves first until the crosshead 12 contacts crosshead 7 after which the piston 5 moves to complete the stroke, the fluid moving from cylinder 4 to cylinder 8 by means of a bore formed in the piston rod 6 of piston 5 and duct 17. The return stroke is effected by introducing fluid at 20.
