Abstract

957,282. Power hammers. TRANS ENERGY CORPORATION. March 25, 1963 [April 26, 1962], No. 11731/63. Heading B3H. An impact press has a ram recocking device supported on the frame of the press in such a way that, at the moment of impact, the device is substantially disengaged from the frame so that no impact forces are transmitted to the device. The ram 16, carrying die 22, is driven downwards by compressed air in the sealed chamber 12 on to a die 46, carried by a base 24, which is suitably supported on a table 26. The chamber 12 and the base are connected by four columns 28, 30, 32, 34 which act as external guides for the ram and internal guides for the yoke 60 of the recocking device 58, which is vertically reciprocated along the outside of the columns by piston and cylinder devices 162, 166, and 164, 168, which are constructed and function the same as devices 162, 166. The upper end of cylinder 170 is slidable within piston 162 and its lower end is welded to the upper end of a second cylinder 172 which is slidable through sleeve 176 of the base 24. The yoke is supported relative to the frame prior to a working stroke partly by hydraulic fluid under pressure, admitted to the cylinder 172 through port 190 of fixed sleeve 184, and partly by the abutment of the base of cylinder 172 with the shoulder 174 of the base 24. The ram is restrained prior to a working stroke by star wheels 86, 88 carried by members pivotally mounted upon shafts 74, 78 which are carried by the yoke. To initiate the working stroke the star wheels are withdrawn, by piston and cylinder mechanisms 102, 104, which may only be operated subsequent to the withdrawal of safety blocks 134, 144, by suitable means (see Fig. 4). The ram thus moves downward at high speed causing the frame and the yoke supported thereon to move upwards. At the same time the pressure within the piston and cylinder mechanisms 162, 166 and 164, 168, is released at such a rate that at the moment of impact the yoke is not supported hydraulically or mechanically upon the frame and is thus substantially disengaged therefrom. After the working stroke the yoke is lowered, the star wheel re-engaged, and the ram retracted to its initial position, against the pressure in the chamber 14, in readiness for the next working stroke.
