Abstract

In a method for the production of iron and steel as in Specification 718,750 by the addition to the melt of a composition containing a rare earth oxide and a reducing agent, the composition also contains an alkaline reacting material. The alkaline reacting material may be an oxide, carbonate or hydroxide of calcium, magnesium, barium or strontium or a carbonate or bicarbonate of sodium or potassium and should form 0,25-20 per cent by weight of the composition.
