Abstract
A mixture for use as an addition agent for treating molten ferrous metal comprises 50 to 85 per cent of a silicon metal alloy containing at least 40 per cent silicon, 5 to 30 per cent of manganese dioxide and 2 to 20 per cent of an alkaline sodium compound. The silicon metal alloy may be ferro silicon and 5 to 20 per cent of it may be replaced by calcium silicon containing 25 to 50 per cent calcium and the remainder silicon, the manganese dioxide may be manganese ore and the alkaline sodium compound sodium hydroxide or the sodium salt of a weak acid, e.g. sodium carbonate or sodium silicate. The mixture may be added to molten ferrous metal in comminuted form or as briquettes in amount not more than 1 per cent during pouring and is stated to produce sound ingots or castings.
