Abstract
A flux comprising a double fluoride of, or a mixture of single fluorides of, aluminium and an alkali metal containing 35-70 per cent by weight Al F3 and having a melting point below 760 DEG C. is applied to the cleaned surface of cobalt, chromium, titanium, nickel, iron or alloys thereof prior to coating with molten aluminium. The alkali metal fluoride may be sodium, potassium or lithium fluoride. The flux may also contain sodium or potassium chloride, calcium fluoride or sodium or potassium fluoberyllate. The flux may be applied in aqueous solution or suspension or in methyl or ethyl alcohol, hexane or carbon tetrachloride. Coating with aluminium may be effected by dipping, the bath or flux-coated article being agitated e.g. by induction heating. Wire or strip may be coated continuously and the coated article may be cooled in the open air, by air blast or by water spray.
