Abstract

776,865. Casting composite articles. DIFFUSION ALLOYS, Ltd. Feb. 28, 1955 [March 9, 1954], No. 6857/54. Class 83 (1). 'Metals are coated with another metal or alloy by casting in a mould which has been provided with a coating of a powder containing or consisting of the coating-metal or alloy, and a fluxing medium. The coating metal, e.g. chromium aluminium, zirconium, nickel, cobalt, copper, alloys thereof and silicon, is preferably applied to the mould in powder form by spraying, dipping or painting, and is preferably suspended in a liquid, e.g. water, alcohol, or an organic composition such as a varnish. A flux may be added, such as salts of the coating metal or other metals such as halides, or organic silicates or borates. The coating may be localized to selected places on the casting, which may be iron, steel, aluminium, zinc and alloys thereof, whilst molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, and alloys thereof may be vacuum-cast. In an example, a sand-mould was sprayed with a suspension of 100 parts, 300 mesh, ferrochrome powder, 2 parts. of sodium chloride and 25 parts of ethyl silicate dissolved in alcohol, and a steel bar was cast in the mould and provided with a coating of chromium. A number of other specific examples are quoted. The mould may be a resin-bonded shell-mould.
