Abstract

A jet-propulsion engine part comprises a sintered ferrous body infiltrated with copper or copper alloy with a continuous coating of aluminium or aluminium alloy. A ferrous blank, impregnated with copper, is made as in Specification 661,031, [Group XXII]. It is then dipped in a molten bath of aluminium at about 815 DEG C causing the coating to alloy with the matrix metal to a depth of 0.003-004 inches 0.2-5 per cent by weight of copper may be added to the bath. The bath is covered with cryolite or alternatively protected by dry hydrogen or carbon dioxide or a flux of zinc, potassium, or sodium chloride. The coated blade then undergoes heat treatment at 423-485 DEG C. Heat treatment may be carried out in air to form a dense oxide cover on the aluminium. Instead of dipping, the blade may be packed in powdered aluminium or aluminium alloy and heated at 425-485 DEG C for 3-4 hours. A further diffusion treatment may follow. Again, the coating may be applied by electroplating followed by diffusion treatment at 425-485 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that anodizing may also be employed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
