Abstract

The invention comprises substituted dialkyl stilbenes of the general formula <FORM:0750516/IV(a)/1> in which R and R1 are alkyl groups of one to four carbon atoms, preferably ethyl groups, and R2 is a hydrogen atom or a carboxylic group, and their preparation by oxidizing the corresponding dialkyl 4:41-dihydroxy-stilbene 3-aldehyde or 3:31-dialdehyde by treatment with silver oxide in an aqueous inert organic solvent or at a raised temperature with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, such as potassium hydroxide. In an example a :b -diethyl-stilboestrol - 3:31 - dialdehyde prepared by the method of Specification 750,515 is oxidized with silver oxide to give a :b -diethylstilbene-4:41-dihydroxy - 3:31 - dicarboxylic acid. The products are useful for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
