Abstract

750,310. Cathode-ray tubes. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. April 12, 1954 [April 10, 1953], No. 9830/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] In a cathode-ray tube of the ferro-magnetic metal cone type the cone is permanently magnetized to provide eight equally-spaced magnetic poles around its circumference, the poles being alternately north and south and so positioned that the extensions of imaginary lines in the plane of the picture area perpendicularly bisecting both pairs of opposite sides of the picture area intersect the cone or an extension thereof midway between two adjacent poles of opposite name, and wherein the distribution of magnetic potential of the eight pole field around the tube is given by the equation P=A sin 4#, where A is a constant, 6 being measured about the axis of the tube from a zero line constituted by one of the lines bisecting one of the sides of the picture. This arrangement causes a small deflection of the beam which eliminates or reduces pin-cushion distortion due to the variation of distance from the centre of deflection to the flat or slightly curved screen with angle of scanning deflection. The cone is made of chrome-iron. The Provisional Specification states in addition that the condition P=A sin 46 need not be satisfied exactly and that by suitable design of the coils used to magnetize the envelope a sufficiently good approximation to this ideal condition can be obtained.
