Abstract

<PICT:0750084/IV(a)/1> Gas-phase oxidation of methane and its lower gaseous homologues, yielding for example formaldehyde, is carried out in a gas-heated furnace wherein two parallel flues 14, 141 receive hot gases at one end and both open at the other end into a central flue 9 or 91 located between them, and parallel tubes 6, 7 through which the reaction mixture is passed extend across the central flue transversely to the direction of flow of hot gases in that flue. Two fans 10 (not shown) and 101, delivering partly to exhaust and partly to the bottoms of the flues 14, 141 respectively, are provided at the bottom of each central flue 9, 91. A burner 151 is provided at the bottom of each side flue 14, 141. The furnace shown comprises two sets of flues &c.ALSO:<PICT:0750084/III/1> In a gas-heating furnace for carrying out chemical reactions, e.g. the oxidation of methane and other lower gaseous paraffins, two parallel flues 14, 141 receive hot gases at one end and both open at the other end into a central flue 9, or 91 located between them, and parallel tubes 6, 7 containing catalyst through which the reaction mixture is passed extend across the central flue transversely to the direction of flow of hot gases in that flue. Two fans 10 (not shown) and 101 delivering partly to exhaust and partly to the bottoms of the flues 14, 141 respectively, are provided at the bottom of each central flue 9, 91. A burner 151 is provided at the bottom of each side flue 14, 141. The furnace shown comprises two sets of flues, &c.
