Abstract
Sulphur dioxide is produced by roasting spent iron oxide gas purifying material in a mixture of air and an inert gas, the latter being present in sufficient proportion to keep the reaction tem <PICT:0683480/III/1> perature above the ignition point of the sulphur but below 400 DEG C. In the form shown, the apparatus consists of a steel retort 5 provided with feed and discharge valves 3 and 51 for the purifying material. Air and flue gas enter the retort through a pipe 1 which terminates under a hood 2 positioned centrally in the retort. Combustion and vapourization of sulphur occurs in the mass of material above the hood, the temperature of the mass being controlled by varying the amount of flue gas admitted with the air so as not to exceed 400 DEG C. The gases from the bed pass through an outlet pipe 14 to a secondary burner 15, secondary air and a combustible gas being admitted through pipes 16 and 17 so that the whole of the sulphur burns to sulphur dioxide which represents about 5-8 per cent by volume of the outlet gas from burner 15. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the gases from the retort are absorbed in aqueous ammonia to form ammonium thiosulphate solution.
