Abstract
<PICT:0342701/III/1> In carrying out a gaseous catalytic reaction in the presence of steam or water vapour, and involving the use of a heat exchanger, the water condensed from the saturated and hot products from the reaction in passage through the exchanger is used to saturate the cold and unsaturated gases which are being heated in the exchanger prior to the reaction. The water flows in the same direction as the gases into which it is evaporated or from which it is condensed. Cold unsaturated gas enters the plate heat exchanger 10 at the point 12 and passes downward while the hot saturated gas enters at point 13 and travels upward. The water condensed in each section 11 traversed by the saturated and hot gas is withdrawn by connections 14 and admitted to the section below traversed by the cold unsaturated gas; thus the water condensed from the hot saturated gas in one stage is evaporated into the cold unsaturated gas in that stage for which the limits of temperature are nearest to those of the first stage.
