Abstract

A mixture, suitable for ammonia synthesis, containing nitrogen and hydrogen in the ratio of 1 : 3 is produced in a coke-cooling plant by treating the hot coke simultaneously with water and air and passing the gases, without intermediate condensation of steam, to an apparatus in which the carbon monoxide is converted to its equivalent of hydrogen by causing it to undergo a catalytic reaction with steam. The excess steam from the cooling operation serves as part or all of the steam required for the carbon monoxide conversion. The air is supplied to the coke-cooling chamber at a higher level than the water, the coke temperatures at the two levels being about 900 DEG C. and 550 DEG C. respectively.
