Abstract

750,011. Making turbine &c.blades. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. May 27,1954 [June 8, 1953], No. 15739/53. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Rolling; forging.-In a method of making turbine blades, pairs of rough blades are rolled from blanks 1, Fig. 2, with an enlarged portion 2 formed mid-way between the ends from which the roots of the blade pairs are formed. The blanks 1 which may be previously tapered towards the ends as by rotary swaging are rolled between a pair of rolls 29, having recesses 29a to accommodate the enlargement 2. The rolls 29 are rotated firstly in one direction and then in the opposite direction to impart a blade form to each end of the blank in succession. Shrouds 31 on one roll guide the blank which may have a twist imparted during rolling or the twist may be imparted subsequently. The method is also applicable to blade cores which are fluted to provide cooling passages and around which an aerofoil blade surface is subsequently placed. Blade roots 3, Fig. 3, may be formed by suitably shaping the recesses 29a in the rolls or may be formed subsequently after dividing the blank in two. The enlargement 2 is initially formed in the blank by upsetting in a forging machine similar to that described in Specification 749,997 but modified to accommodate blanks of two blade lengths.
