Abstract

750,001. Nitriding. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. Dec. 1, 1952 [March 13, 1952], No. 30440/52. Addition to 749,992. Class 72. Surfaces of metallic articles are nitrided according to claim 1 of the parent Specification by confining the articles in a sealed chamber, adding free ammonia (liquid or vapour) from an external source in amount at least 1 gram per square foot of surface, and heating the chamber to 800‹F. to 1200‹F. while confining the ammonia at a pressure not less than 100 lbs. per sq. in. absolute. As shown, articles 22 are placed in a sealed chamber 12 within a furnace 10 and a supply tank 13, containing both liquid and gaseous ammonia, and having a water jacket 14, is connected by a pipe 15 to the chamber 12. A charge of ammonia is admitted to the chamber under a pressure of 700 lbs./sq. in. and a valve 20 in the pipe 15 closed, the temperature in the furnace is then held at the nitriding temperature. One ammonia supply tank may feed several chambers. The chamber may be exhausted of air before being charged with ammonia. An intermediate tank or reservoir having a water jacket may be interposed between the tank and the chamber, Fig. 3 (not shown) or the ammonia may be fed into a metering device before being charged into the chamber, Figs 4 and 5 (not shown).
