A yarn storage device interposed between a creel and a warping machine, to take up slack when the beam is reversed, comprises falling rollers 31a, 31b normally supported clear of the yarns 6 by half bearings 29 on a frame 25 ; when the frame is lowered by a handle 19, the bearings are shogged by a ramp 32, leaving the rollers hanging in loops of yarn. Before the frame is lowered, another handle (not shown) is operated to depress a rod 14, pivoted at 12, thereby drawing yarn from the creel (situated to the left of the Figure) to form a loop 6a, whereupon the yarns are clamped at 5. When the falling rollers are lowered as described above, the loop 6a straightens out (the rod 14 rising against spring loading) to provide an initial source of slack to obviate the excessive tension that would otherwise occur due to the rollers pressing on taut horizontal yarns. The falling rollers may be of slightly different weights so that, when the beam is turned backwards, they form loops in the yarns successively instead of simultaneously. When the beam is turned forwards again and the rollers have all risen to the top of their travel (as shown at 31a), the handle 19 is operated, whereby the frame 25 is moved sideways and upwards to pick up the rollers in the bearings 29 and lift them clear of the yarns. The slack thereby produced is taken up by the spring-loaded rod 14 re-forming the loop 6a; the other handle (not shown) is then operated to release the clamp 5 and lift the rod 14, which is then held clear of the yarns by a latching action of its operating linkage.
