Abstract
748,059. Helicopter for towing. PIASECKI HELICOPTER CORPORATION. May 11, 1954 [May 13, 1953], No. 13779/54. Class 4. A helicopter 11 having two rotors 12, 13 in tandem and capable of differential collective pitch control to achieve pitching movement of the helicopter is provided with a towing connection 16 secured to the helicopter at a position 17 so located that when the controls are adjusted to give forward motion to the helicopter a line through a towing cable 18, the connection 16 and point 17 intersects, with the lift vector a, the centre of gravity 15 of the aircraft. Such arrangement ensures stability of the aircraft for if the cable 18 breaks the helicopter will automatically right itself by an upward pitching movement and any excessive downward pitching movements resulting from gusts will be counterbalanced by the movement created by the load exerted by the tow cable acting about the offset centre of gravity 15. U.S.A. Specification 2,507,993 is referred to.
