Abstract

711,637. Controlling aircraft. DABROWSKI, J. Jan. 1, 1952, No. 80/52. Class 4 An adjustable tailplane'for aircraft consists of a tailplane a pivotally mounted about an axis b disposed rearwardly of but not beneath the centre of pressure of the tailplane when the aircraft is in its normal level flying position. Resilient means. e.g. a compression spring c, are provided for opposing the pitching torque exerted by the airstream on the tailplane about the axis b. The negative angle of incidence of the surface is varied by the airspeed, so that an increase in speed will increase the negative angle of incidence, and the aircraft will climb and thus lose speed. Similarly a reduction in speed will result in a dive with consequent gain in speed. Manual control e may be provided which may override the automatic control. The latter may be detached by the pilot during flight. An adjustable device d is provided to predetermine the stable speed of the aircraft.
