Abstract

468,559. Controlling aircraft. PITT, H. L. Oct. 7, 1935, No. 27683. [Class 4] Means for controlling aircraft includes an orifice 3 in each wing, a surface 2 in each orifice adapted to be adjusted so that when its leading edge is turned to project downwardly and forwardly relative to the wing, air flows from the underside of the wing over both surfaces of the control surface in a direction inclined at an angle C of less than 90‹ to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft. In one form, each surface 2 is adjustable about the axis A, B and is disposed in swept-back wings 4. The surfaces on opposite sides of the aircraft may be adjusted separately or together and may be turned through an angle equal to or greater than 90‹. The centres of area of the surfaces are disposed at about three-quarters the wing-span from the wing root. The surfaces may be operated against the action of springs and may be fitted to tail-less aeroplanes. The maximum area of the surfaces may be about one-third the wing area. Various shapes for the surface are shown and described in the Specification.
