Abstract

558,498. Controlling aeroplanes. HILL, G. T. R. July 24, 1942, No. 10409. [Class 4] An aileron and an independently adjustable trimming wing-tip are mounted on each outer end of the wings of an aeroplane of the tailless type. The wing-tips are adjustable about an axis transverse or oblique to the aircraft and may be adjustable also about a fore-and-aft axis. An aeroplane of the tailless-type such as described in Specifications 249,572, [Class 4], 427,186, and is shown having its wings 10 swept back, tapering outwardly in plan and washed out in incidence toward the wing tips. The wings may also be arranged with a dihedral. High lift angle flaps 11 may be provided. Ailerons 14, 15 are mounted on the outer ends of the wings 10 and are operable in the usual manner by the pilot's control stick. both in the same direction or in opposite directions. In addition, trimming wing-tips 12, 13 are mounted on the wing-ends and according to Figs. 1 and 6 are carried by shafts 18 rotatable in bearings 19, 20. Adjustment of each wing-tip is effected by a nut-member 25 rotatable on a screw-member 22 fixed in the wing-tip. The member 25 has a ball- and-socket mounting 25a in a member 28 of the wing- end 10a and carries a sprocket 26 connected by a chain 29 to a sprocket 30 located near the pilot's seat. The shafts may be disposed at the forward edge of the wing-tips instead of at the rear edges shown or they may be arranged as shown at 18b. in Fig. 4 with a bent end portion secured to the wing-tip, the screw and nut adjusting means being disposed at 26b. According to Figs. 5, 9, each wing-tip is adjustable both about a transverse and a fore-and-aft axis and for this purpose is rotatably mounted by bearings 43 on a shaft 18c which can be inclined in a vertical plane about a spherical bearing 42 in the wing by a nut-member 35 which is caused to traverse a screw 37 fixed in the wing and operated by a sprocket and chain 36 - - 38. The wing-tip is turned about the shaft 18c by mechanism similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 6. The ailerons may extend inwardly so as to be in part in rear of the'wings. In normal flight the trimming tips 12, 13 may be so set as to form extensions of the wings but in slow speed flight as at starting and landing may be set at a negative incidence thus preventing them from stalling. By adjustment about a fore-and-aft axis additional negative dihedral angle adjustment may be given to the trimming-tips.
