Abstract

747,263. Loud-speakers. GOODMANS INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 18,1954 [May 21, 1953; Nov. 20, 1953], Nos. 14370/53 and 32294/53. Class 40 (4). A cabinet encloses the back of a loud-speaker except for a port 4 small enough to have negligible radiation, and a cowling 6 is fitted over the back of the loud-speaker to form a small air chamber 7 opening into the remainder of the cabinet. The vent 4, which may be extended as at 5, weights the diaphragm mass, lowering its effective resonance and introducing a higher frequency resonance. The air mass enclosed by the cowling 6 also augments the diaphragm mass to damp the lowered resonance and provides a resistance to movement of the diaphragm to resonance. The cabinet and cowling may be lined with felt to reduce highfrequency reflections. The cowling may have various shapes (Figs. 2, 3, not shown). It may wholly enclose the rear of the diaphragm, Fig. 4, except for along port 14.
