A plate having a conductive surface coated with a photoconductive insulating material which has been uniformly charged is placed in a cassette having a front wall the inner surface of which is wholly or largely conductive, a potential of the same sign as but of a higher value than that of the charged layer of the plate is applied to said inner surface, and the plate is exposed to X- or gamma-rays whilst the inner surface or conductive part is maintained at said applied potential. Typically the cassette is a dark slide and the front wall sliding member is of insulating material carrying on its inner surface a conductive mesh or coating. Development may be effected as in Specification 723,539.
