Abstract

745,730. Sorting by size. PACKMAN, P. J. Dec. 15, 1953 [Sept. 15, 1952], No. 23147/52. Class 117. Apparatus for sorting e.g. potatoes by size comprises either (i) a divergent rail separator or (ii) a multi-stage parallel rail sieve. A divergent rail separator, Fig. 2, 3 and Figs. 1, 4, 5 (not shown) comprises endless, trapezium-sectioned driven belts 15, 18 supported on guide-plates 32; the belt 18 having diamond-based pyramid pads 19 bolted to its upper surface so that gauging openings are formed by the notches between the pads and the outer rails 15. The belt 18 preferably moves at a speed faster than the outer belts 15 thereby causing the potatoes to rotate. Additional features:-(i) The spacing of the guide rails is adjustable by a " nut-and-screw " arrangement for each rail operated by a common shaft. Figs. 6,10 (not shown). (ii) The apparatus is preferably mounted on a transportable base. (iii) Rubber fingers may be arranged above the belts to assist in turning the potatoes as they pass along, Fig. 10 (not shown). The parallel rail separator, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), comprises a multi-stage sieve, each stage comprising endless driven belts, similar to the divergent rail separator but the belts 15, 18 move parallel to one another.
