Abstract

405,001. Testing extensible threads. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., 32, Osnaburgh Street, London, LEE, R. F., and BLOXHAM, A. R., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. June 28, 1932, No. 18220. [Class 120 (iii).] In a continuous process for testing the tensile strength of vulcanised rubber threads a number of spaced threads 1 are collectively subjected to the same degree of extension. The threads pass through a spacing comb 2 and are then stretched between pairs of rollers 3, 4 and 5, 6, the threads after extension being deposited in a slack condition upon a surface 7 moving at a speed not greater than that of the rollers 3, 4. Broken threads are diverted on to a second conveyer 10. The rollers are preferably rubber coated and the pairs may be pressed together by springs or by fluid pressure. The rollers are suitably driven through belts, chains, pulleys or gearing, the pair 5, 6 being driven faster than the pair 3, 4 to produce the necessary extension. The conveyer 7 is supported on metal rollers 8, 9 which serve to conduct away any charges of electricity. The Provisional Specification describes also an arrangement in which the conveyer 7 is vibrated or air jets are directed on to the threads to free them from the conveyer surface.
