745,229. Driving gear for ships' propellers. FAIRFIELD SHIPBUILDING & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. July 5, 1954 [May 6, 1953], No. 12544/53. Class 114. In a ship-propelling speed reduction gear comprising a large driving gear-wheel 14 driven at low speed by a reciprocating engine 10, a large driven gear-wheel 20 driving a propeller shaft 13 at a still lower speed, an intermediate fluid slip coupling 15 (hydraulic or magnetic), a small gear-wheel 17 connected with the driving gear-wheel 14 and rotating at high speed the driving component of the coupling, and a small gear-wheel 19 rotated at high speed by the driven component of the coupling and connected with the driven gear-wheel 20, the speed-change ratio is greater between the coupling and the driven gear-wheel 20 than between the driving gear-wheel 14 and the coupling. The gear-wheel 14 drives two gearwheels 17, each of which drives a coupling 15, each driving a gear-wheel 19, both these gearwheels 19 being connected to and driving the gear-wheel 20. Hence the drive between the engine 10 and the large driven gear-wheel 20 is divided into two lines of transmission, each incorporating its own fluid slip coupling 15.
