Abstract

744,980. Gas or vapour burners; incandescent gas fires. RADIANT HEATING, Ltd., and DOCKING, A. Aug. 6, 1953 [Sept. 10, 1952], No. 22733/52. Classes 75(1) and 126. A surface combustion burner has a housing which supports an apertured ceramic member having a shield adjacent its peripheral edge which extends outwardly from the outlet surface of the ceramic member and supports a refractory member or members extending across the outlet surface of the ceramic member in spaced relation therewith. The burner comprises a number of apertured ceramic plaques 2 mounted in a frame 3 and fed with a gas or vapour which burns at the outlet surface thereof. A U-shaped member 6 fixed or releasably secured by spring clips to the front of the frame 3 prevents air currents moving upwardly across the outlet surface of the plaques 2 to avoid cooling thereof. A number of refractory tubes 7 mounted on stainless steel rods 8 are supported by the member 6 in parallel relationship across the face of the plaques 2 and reflect heat on to the plaques 2. The burner can be arranged to pivot in a vertical or horizontal plane. In an alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 2 a casing 9 secured to the face of the burner is provided with inwardly directed walls 10 which form a rectangular aperture and shield the outlet surface of the plaques 2 from air currents. The tubes 7 are supported at their upper ends in apertures 11 having a rearwardly inclined rear wall 13 and at their lower ends in recesses 12. The tubes 7 are removed by lifting, then tilting to the chain dotted position 14 and then withdrawing downwardly. The tubes 7 may be of circular, triangular or rectangular cross-section.
