Abstract
744,805. Chains. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. 1. March 2, 1953 [March 24, 1952], No. 19367/54. Divided out of 744,768, [Group VIII]. Class 24. A chain assemblage comprises a plurality of links and pins securing the links together, each link having a hole to receive a pin and a seat through which passes a pin received by the hole of another link of the chain, the arrangement being such that rotation of a link about the pin in its hole forces the pin of said other link along said slot whereby adjacent links are separated or drawn together. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, which shows part of the apparatus for stretching webs of sheet material described in the parent Specification, the chain comprises links as shown in Fig. 4, each having a pivot hole 15 and a slot 16. Two sets of links are stacked in pairs above and below a guide plate 35 and are connected by pins 18 which pass through the pivot hole 15 of one link and the slot 16 of the next link in the chain, and travel between the guide plate 35 and a guide rail 29. Web grippers comprising a bracket 22 and a base-plate 27 are mounted on some or all of the pins 18. The web W is gripped between the base-plate 27 and an arm 23 pivoted to the bracket 22 which has a slot 26 engaging an adjacent pin. The slot 16 in each link is inclined at an angle to the line joining the axes of the pins 18, so the tension in the chain tends to rotate each link about its pivot hole 15. The tip 17 of each link engages a slanting cam surface 36 on a guide rail 30 which is pivoted at 31 so that its divergence from guide rail 29 can be varied to control the amount of rotation of each link and the distance between the pins 18, which varies from x to nx (Fig. 4) as the links rotate. The pin passing through the pivot hole 15 of one link need not pass through the slot 16 of the next link and the contour of the links can be modified so that they can be stacked in units of three, four or more. Fig. 5 shows an alternative link construction to Fig. 4. In both these constructions the angle # between the axis of the seat and a line joining the axes of the pins increases as the link rotates so that the force F tending to rotate the link also increases. In an alternative construction, Fig. 9, the slot 16 is curved and in this case the rotating force remains constant as the link rotates.
