Abstract

743,339. Container closures. COOKSON, W. Jan. 6, 1954 [Jan. 21, 1953], No. 177.8/53. Class 44. [Also in Group XVII] A releasable closure ring 11, Fig. 2, for securing a lid 8 to the beaded edge of a container 6 with the interposition of a gasket 10, has a snap action latching means comprising a wedge-shaped catch and a transverse slit between the catch and the adjacent end of the ring, and a slot in the other end of the ring adapted to engage the catch, the transverse slit providing means for the insertion of a tool to reduce the closure ring to a smaller diameter and force the latch into a secured position. In the first embodiment the ring 11 is formed with an enlarged end 12, Fig. 3, which can be engaged over the other end 13 until a catch 18 engages in a slot 14. A tool can then be inserted at the rear of the hollow member 15 bridging the slot 14 to engage the slit 19 in the other end of the ring 11 and to prise the catch 18 into the hollow member 15. A sealing wire passes through perforations in the sides of member 15 and the hollow catch 18. In an alternative construction, Fig. 7, a catch 32 is initially secured to bear against the front edge 34 of a slot 29 and is prised from this position into a space in the slot 29 between two bridge members 30 and 31. Both constructions are released by prising the ends of the ring apart.
