Class 9(1) An artillery cartridge case is provided with a base 1 in which a primer 2 is held by screw threads or force fit. The priming elements within the tube 20 comprise a cap 53, loosely packed black powder 52 and compressed black powder 51 over which is a thin disc closing the end 3. An annular charge 4, 5 surrounds the tube 20 and is held between metal plates 6, 7 overlying cardboard shims 9, 10, a felt washer 8 being placed between the shim 10 and plate 7. A wrapping 11 surrounding the charge may be an alloy of tin and lead. The plates 6, 7 are clamped between flanges 13, 14 of a tube 12 surrounding the tube 20 and provided with ports 15 registering with the charge 4, 5 and acting as flash passages for ignition of the inner surface of the charge. The inner diameter of the charge 4, 5 is such that an annular gap exists between the charge and the tube 12, so that ignition may be simultaneous over the inner surface of the charge. Instead of the gap, longitudinal grooves registering with the ports may be provided in the outer surface of tube 12. In a modification, the primer charge 21 is placed-in a cup-shaped housing 22 hav= ing lateral ports 24 and closed by a disc 23, which may be a tin and lead alloy. The housing 22 has a tubular extension 25 fitting within the bore of the base and surrounding the firing tube 2.
