Abstract

740,925. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and SIMMONS, A. W. May 4,1954 [May 15, 1953], No. 13637/53. Class 103 (1). In a distribution valve assembly for a compressed air railway braking system comprising a control reservoir charging valve 5 operated by a movable abutment 60 to establish and to cut off communication between the control reservoir 7 and its charging source, the abutment 60 which, as shown, is a diaphragm, is subjected on one face to control reservoir pressure acting in chamber 62, and on the other face in chamber 59 to brake pipe pressure, whilst the inshot valve 4 is open, and to a pressure which is lower than brake-pipe pressure whilst the inshot valve is closed. This last condition is brought about by arranging for the space 59 to be placed in communication through passages 66 and cavity 69 with atmospheric port 104 when the inshot value 4 is in its open lower position. This arrangement avoids the possibility of the control reservoir charging valve being opened as a result of a temporary increase in brake pipe pressure above the normal made in order to speed up release of the brakes, so that the charging valve might be opened too soon and the consequential overcharging of the control reservoir causing a false operation of the valve to its application position when the brake pipe pressure returns to normal.
