Abstract

In the production of artificial filament s threads, fibres and like products by the extrusion of viscose into an aqueous coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate and zinc sulphate, products having a thicker skin, a non-crenulated surface and a reduced water-imbibition and gel swelling factor are obtained by adding to the viscose at least 0.1 millimole per 100 gms. of the viscose of a dithiocarbamate having the formula <FORM:0739072/IV (a)/1> where M is a monovalent metal or a monovalent basic radical, R1 is hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and, when R1 is hydrogen, R is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical or a monoalkylene monoamine chain or a dialkylene monoamine chain or a polyalkylene polyamine chain or a substituted polyalkylene polyamine chain and, when R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, R is an aliphatic or a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical joined to R1 to form therewith a closed aliphatic hydrocarbon chain, n is 1 or more and R has the same valency as n. The process also enables unripened viscose to be spun. Specified dithiocarbamates are the sodium salt of 2-aminoethyl dithiocarbamate, di-sodium ethylene bis-dithiocarbamate, the disodium salts of the bis-dithiocarbamates of polyamines such as diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine and pentaethylene hexamine, sodium pentamethylene dithiocarbamate, sodium dimethyl dithiocarbamate, sodium cyclohexyl dithiocarbamate and diethyl ammonium diethyl dithiocarbamate. Examples are given.
