Abstract
Regenerated cellulose filaments are made from viscose by adding to the viscose at least 0.1 per cent and preferably 0.3 per cent of a product obtained by reacting an alkylene oxide, in the molar proportion of at least 6:1, with an aliphatic acid or an aliphatic alcohol containing at least 6 carbon atoms in a chain, or with an ester or amide of such an acid containing an active hydrogen atom, and extruding the viscose into an aqueous coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate and at least 3 per cent, preferably 5-8 per cent, of zinc sulphate. In an example, 0.3 per cent of the reaction product of ricinoleic acid with ethylene oxide in the molar proportion of 1:8.6 is added to a viscose containing 7.0 per cent of cellulose, 6.1 per cent of caustic soda and 36.6 per cent of carbon bisulphide, the last percentage being based on the cellulose, and the viscose, after ripening to a sodium chloride salt index of 10.4, is extruded into an aqueous spin bath at 50 DEG C. containing per litre 85 grams of sulphuric acid, 300 grams of sodium sulphate and 102 grams of zinc sulphate. In other examples the products used are formed by reacting ethylene oxide with coconut fatty acid amide and ricinoleic acid acetate respectively. The filaments produced consist entirely of skin with no inner core. Specifications 541,099, [Group IV], 654,083 and 711,519 are referred to.
