Abstract
Chlorinated 1 : 3 : 3 - trimethyl - 1 - phenyl hydrindene and chlorinated 1 : 3 : 3 : 6-tetramethyl - (41 - methylphenyl) hydrindene are stabilized by heating with an alkali metal oxide or hydroxide such as potassium hydroxide. The treatment is suitably carried out by heating the crude chlorinated hydrindene with the alkali metal alkoxide for about one hour at 180 DEG to 190 DEG C. and subjecting the stabilized product to distillation under reduced pressure. The stabilized product may be further purified by treating with an activated earth having a strong affinity for water such as attapulgus earth. The crude chlorinated starting materials may be made by chlorinating 1 : 3 : 3-trimethyl-1-phenyl hydrindene or 1 : 3 : 3 : 6-tetramethyl-1-(4-methylphenyl) hydrindene preferably at 30 DEG to 100 DEG C. in the absence of solvents. Examples describe the purification and stabilization according to the invention of a chlorinated 1 : 3 : 3 - trimethyl - 1 - phenyl hydrindene containing 23.5 per cent of chlorine and of a trichloro - 1 : 3 : 3 - trimethyl - 1 - phenyl hydrindene.
