Abstract

112,166. Crawford, W. J. Dec. 28, 1916. Alcohols; chloroform.-Crude alcohols are purified by treatment with sodium or potassium hypochlorite, chloroform or other chloro compounds being obtained as by-products. The process is carried out by mixing the crude alcohol - (wood spirit or ethyl alcohol) with a concentrated solution of the hypochlorite and distilling; the chloloform &c. are separated from the alcohol in the distillate by diluting with water, and the process repeated if necessary. Ethyl alcohol may be finally purified from traces of chlorine by distillation with an alkali carbonate or calcium hydrate solution. The crude chloroform obtained may be used as a solvent or treated to separate the chloroform.
