Abstract
531,852. Chlorinating rubber. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Hercules Powder Co.). Aug. 3, 1939, No. 22576. [Class 70] Chlorinated rubber is made by treating a carbon tetrachloride solution of rubber with chlorine at a temperature below about 60‹C. until the chlorine content is 52-63 per cent. and the solution breaks up into a 2-phase system which is treated at a temperature depending upon the viscosity desired in the final product, with a mixture of an oxygen-containing gas such as air, and chlorine until it reverts to a 1-phase system, and thereafter continuing the addition of said gas mixture until the chlorinated rubber contains at least 64 per cent. of chlorine. If the treatment of the 2-phase system is effected at low temperature, e.g. below 40‹C, the 2-phase system persists for 2-5 hours, and a high viscosity product results ; if the 2-phase system is heated to from 40-60‹C. the 1-phase system returns in from 5 minutes to 2 hours, and the final product is of low viscosity.
