Abstract

A process for the purification of phenol, derived from cumene by oxidation followed by cleavage of the resulting hydroperoxide, and containing colour-forming impurities, comprises, after removal of unconverted reactants, acetone, and cleavage catalyst, heating the impure phenol with 0.025 to 0.25 pound moles of sodium or potassium hydroxide per 1,000 pounds of phenol for 16-48 hours at 95-170 DEG C., separating the phenol by distillation from the resultant mixture, heating the phenol distillate with 0.1 to 1.0% ferric chloride for 8 hours to 14 days at a temperature between the m.p. of the phenol and 80 DEG C., and separating the purified phenol by distillation, the water content of the mixture of phenol and ferric chloride being less than 1.0% by weight. The treatment with alkali metal hydroxide is preferably effected using caustic soda, as the dry substance or as a strong aqueous solution, at a concentration of 0.4% by weight. This treatment may be effected in the presence of iron e.g. by heating in the presence of iron powder or by working in a mild steel vessel. After treatment of the phenol with ferric chloride, about 3 moles of sodium or potassium hydroxide per mole of chloride may be added to the phenol before the subsequent distillation so as to reduce the risk of corrosion of plant equipment. Specification 647,063 is referred to.
