Abstract

737,698. Mine-chocks. BUTTERLEY CO., Ltd., and CHRICH, P. B. Feb. 26, 1954 [Feb. 27, 1953], No. 5505/53. Class 20 (2). A mine chock consists of a cap adapted to be raised by wedges and carrying portions to press against the mine roof, each capable of being released under load when a toggle device is actuated, and a further independent portion adapted to be raised by a wedge to bear against a roof beam and press it against the roof and to be held in position by a catch which can be released to lower the further independent portion and thus free the roof beam. A chock cap 1 is adapted to be raised by wedges 3, 4, co-operating with inclined surfaces 5 on the top 6 of the chock body to press hardwood pads 13 against the roof, the pads 13 being supported by flat topped members 12 having inclined lower surfaces 11 engaging inclined upper edges of upright plates 7 mounted on the cap base 2, each member 12 being held in a roof-supporting position by a toggle lever 17 and a link 19 pivotally connected between a lug 15 on the member 12 and a lug 21 on the cap base 2. By withdrawing sliding members 24 which have means to co-operate with lugs 22 on the toggle levers 17, the toggle levers are turned over their centres, and thereby the supporting members 12 are released to slide downwardly and outwardly. The slides 24 are connected by a cross-piece 28 and are held in place by a removable peg 26. With the peg 26 removed, the slides 24 can be withdrawn from a safe distance to trip the chock by means of a chain 27. In the centre of the chock a wedge 30 co-operates with inclined surfaces 6 on the top of the chock body and supports a wedge-shaped member 32 having a steeper wedge angle and upon which a support 34 for a beam 39 is slidably mounted. The beam support 34 is releasably retained in a beam-supporting position by a pivoted bar 36 which engages the upper corners of the wedge 32 and the beam is raised to press against'the roof by driving in the wedge 30. To release the beam 39 the bar 36 is knocked upwardly so that the support 34 is free to slide down the wedge 32.
