Abstract

Aluminium and aluminium alloy surfaces are brightened by treatment with an aqueous solution containing nitric acid, an ammonium fluoride and an alcohol brightening agent, the effectiveness of the solution being maintained during the treatment by the addition of further quantities of nitric acid, an ammonium fluoride and an alcohol brightening agent and by removing from the solution a small amount of solution and adding a quantity of new solution equal to that removed. The fluoride is preferably ammonium bifluoride, the brightening agent ethylene glycol, glycerine or sugar and the solution may also contain chromic acid. Specification 726,660 is referred to.
