A counter comprises a driving shaft 1, a fixed shaft 4, a cam 5 rotatably mounted on the fixed shaft and driven by the driving shaft through gearing, the cam being adapted to alternately disengage two pawls 6, 7 from a notch on a disc 10 rotatably mounted on the fixed shaft 4, whereupon a spring coupling 12 between the cam 5 and the disc 10 causes rotation of the disc until the disc is locked by a pawl, the movement of the disc being transmitted through a maltese cross mechanism 17, 18 to the first numeral wheel of the counter 21.
