789,595. Counting-apparatus. UNITED GAS INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 22, 1955 [Aug. 23, 1954], No. 24465/54. Class 106 (1). In indicating or registering mechanism for gas and like meters the drive from the metering mechanism to the usual index driving spindle is transmitted to the planet carrier of an epicyclic gearing of which the respective sun wheels each effect rotation of a corresponding toothed wheel, one or both of the said toothed wheels being connected to the driving element of an index or counter mechanism and being selectively operable, the selection of the toothed wheel to be operated at any moment being effected under the control of a timing mechanism, which operates a trip device to immobilize the toothed wheel that is not required to operate. The shaft 5, Fig. 4, is driven from the meter and carries a differential gear comprising sun wheels 7, 9 and planet pinions 11, 12. A counter drive spindle 18 is connected by gearing 13, 16 to the sun wheel 7 and a counter drive spindle 19 is connected by gearing 14, 17 to the sun wheel 9. Below the gears 13, 14, 16 and 17 is a pivoted bar 22, Fig. 3, which carries two spring fingers 26, 27 and which is controlled by a star wheel 29 so as to assume either of two positions in which one of the counter gear trains is locked by the finger 26 or 27. The star wheel 29 is connected to a coaxial ratchet wheel 31, Fig. 7, which is actuated by a spring-pressed pawl 32 carried by one arm of a bell crank lever 34 the other arm of which co-operates with two pins 35, 36 carried respectively by arms adjustably mounted on a spindle of a timing mechanism. The two counters are thus operated alternately for predetermined time intervals. The fingers 26, 27 may be in the form of friction pads which cooperate with friction discs. If only one counter is provided the idle gear train is appropriately loaded. The pivoted bar 22 may co-operate with switches to send impulses to distant meters.
