Abstract

[Also in Group XXII] In an automatic electrode feed system for spark cutting apparatus of the kind in which an electrode and the workpiece are immersed in paraffin, and a recurrent spark passed between them by charging a condenser from a D.C. supply and discharging it across the electrode gap, the electrode is actuated by a split field electric motor, one field of which is in series with the D.C. supply. The motor has its armature A across the D.C. supply, and one field winding F2 in series with the limiting resistor R3 and the electrode and workpiece E, W, across which latter is connected the condenser C. The second field winding F1 is constantly excited by being connected across the D.C. supply and opposes the first winding. By means of resistors R1 and R4 the currents through F1 and F2 are made equal when the correct average current is flowing through the spark gap. Deviations then cause the motor to run in a corrective direction. A short-circuited generator G and a paddle P on the motor shaft provide damping.
