Abstract

736,544. Geiger counters. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. June 15, 1954 [March 30, 1953], No. 8711/53. Class 39 (1). In an end-window Geiger-Muller tube provided with a filling of krypton with iodine as quenching agent, iodine is present within the tube in the solid state so that the iodine pressure is the saturated vapour pressure at the operating temperature. The tube shown comprises a cylindrical cathode 1 closed at one end by a window 4 and sealed to a glass section 2 which supports the anode and is equipped with an end cap 3. Vacuum-distilled dry iodine is deposited in a band 5 on the interior surface of the glass section 2 by first driving all the iodine to the cap end of the tube by heating the window end, and thereafter heating the anode cap, e.g. by high-frequency induction heating, to drive the iodine to a relatively narrow band. The heating operation on the cap may be that used for soldering the cap in position.
