Abstract
736,335. Lubricating. UNITED AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 2, 1953 [April 22, 1953], No. 30252/53. Class 12 (3). A storage tank for use in an engine lubricantcirculating system comprises an outer shell for holding the main body of lubricant, a hopper spaced from the walls of the shell and through which a part of the lubricant may be circulated in segregated relation to the main body of lubricant, separate inlet openings in the tank for flow to the interior of the tank and hopper respectively, and a conduit leading from one of the inlet openings to the hopper, the conduit comprising an annulus surrounding the hopper whereby lubricant flowing through the conduit may transfer heat to the main body of lubricant. As shown a reservoir 10 for lubricating oil contains a hopper assembly 12 comprising members 13, 14 with an annular space 15 between them. Conduits 16, 17, 18, 19 are provided leading from the reservoir and hopper assembly to a valve assembly 21 in a circulating system which includes an engine 22, pumps 23, 24 and flow lines 25, 26. The valve assembly may be of the kind disclosed in Specification 712,085. On starting the engine, the cold lubricant is pumped through flow line 25, conduit 17, annular space 15 between members 13, 14, the interior of the member 14, outlet conduit 16 and now line 26 back to the engine. When the lubricant is sufficiently heated, the valve assembly is operated so that the lubricant passes to the tank through conduit 19 and returns to the engine by conduit 18, the hopper being by-passed.
