Means for heating and cooling the lubricant in a lubrication system for a rotary fluid compressor driven by a prime mover which has a fluid cooling system, includes the combination with the lubrication system of a heat exchanger adapted to coact with the fluid cooling system of the prime mover, whereby the lubricant may be pre-heated before it is connected to be driven by the prime mover. As shown, a rotary fluid compressor 1 is driven through a clutch 2 by a prime mover 3 provided with a jacket for cooling water. Air is supplied through a filter 5 and an inlet 4 to the compressor. The outlet 10 leads to a separator 12 where lubricant is separated by centrifugal action and drops into a reservoir 13, the air passing through a conduit 15 to a reservoir 16 provided with an air filter 17 and in which further lubricant is separated. This lubricant is returned to the reservoir 13 by an auxiliary pump 19a. A main pump 19, which may be of gear type, pumps lubricant from the reservoir 13 through a cooler 22 and filter 25, before delivery to the compressor 1. A heat exchanger 26 is provided in the reservoir 13 and is connected by conduits 27, 29 to the water-circulating system of the prime mover 3. A pump 30 circulates the water through the conduits 27, 29 and also through the radiator 31 of the prime mover. A thermally-controlled valve 29<SP>1</SP> is provided in the conduit 29, the valve, which is normally open, being closed when the temperature in the conduit reaches a predetermined temperature.
