Labels to be applied to a garment by heat and pressure and subsequently peeled off are made from a closely-woven single ply fabric having weft yarns d and warp yarns C of cotton or viscose, which together constitute a coherent fabric, and thermoplastic warp yarns A, which pass over one weft yarn and under two, whereby the fabric has a lower proportion of thermoplastic material on the upper face (which is to receive printed identification markings) than on the lower face (which is to adhere to the garment) ; at half the points, such as X, Y, at which the thermoplastic yarns pass over a weft yarn, they are flanked and obscured by the adjacent warp yarns C, thereby further reducing the proportion. In another embodiment, the thermoplastic yarns pass over one weft yarn and under three, alternate thermoplastic yarns being obscured at all points on the upper face, and the intervening ones not at all. The thermoplastic warp yarns are woven under slightly lower tension than the others ; they may be cellulose acetate or other ester or ether, polyvinyl formal or chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, or polythene, and may be monofils or multifilament yarns. The fabric may be woven wide and cut into strips, or may be woven the width of a label, in which case one edge is without thermoplastic yarns to provide an unadhering tab to facilitate peeling it off the garment.
