A shuttle is picked by coil springs which are compressed and then locked in their compressed condition by a locking means which is released when the shuttle is to be picked. Coil springs 34 are located between end plates 26, 27 and are compressed by a plate 31 actuated by a pusher bar 24 which is actuated through a system of links by the oscillation of a control rod 19. The springs are locked in their compressed position by a pivoted lock arm 36 which is urged downwardly by a spring loaded wire 49, the arm 36 being in locking engagement with an arm 41 on the plate 31 when the plate has sufficiently compressed the springs. To release the locking means a link 44 which is connected by links to the control rod 19 lifts the locking arm 36 and so releases the plate 31. to which a picking arm 50 is secured. To the picking arm 50 is connected a metal sleeve containing discs of rubber and rawhide for resiliently receiving the shuttle tip. After plate 31 has picked the shuttle through the arm 50, it is brought to rest by rubber discs 61 or by pneumatic means. The tension of the springs 34 may be varied by adjusting the position of a plate 57, against which one end of each spring bears, relative to the end plate 26 by means of a screw 59.
