Abstract

733,595. Coaster hubs. MAILLARD, M. H. E. Sept. 2, 1953 [May 26, 1953], No. 24303/53. Class 136(2). In a back-pedal drum brake of the type comprising a conventional cycle hub with a fixed sprocket 4 and free-wheel device permitting by forward-pedalling the driving of the wheel in the usual manner, the fixed sprocket 4 is associated with a pawl and ratchet device, 8, 11, when the sprocket is driven by back-pedalling, to cause a cam 11b to rotate so that this cam will operate on lever 13 rigid with an expander 21 acting upon the brake shoes 22 so as to produce the desired braking action. An intermediate driving race member 5 is formed with cam faces 5a which expand rollers 5b in notches formed in the end portion 7a of a sleeve 7. Three pawls 8 are slidably mounted in recesses in the member 7. Circlips 9 prevent the pawls escaping radially and coil springs 10 urge the pawls against the front teeth 11a formed in a member 11 of which the cam 11b is an extension. The member 11 is rotatably mounted between race members 3 and 12 by balls 12a, 12b.
