[Also in Group XVI] As shown in Fig. 1, a hollow axle 1, mounted in bearings 2, in a headstock 3, is driven by a handle 6 through gears 4 and 5. The inner end of the axle 1 carries a disc 7 and a tapered mandrel 8 to receive a reel 10 on which ribbon is to be wound. The reel 10 is retained on the mandrel 8 bv a disc 11 mounted on a rod 12 axially adjustable in a tailstock 13. The ribbon is tensioned before winding by passage around parallel rods 16, 17 and 18 adjustably mounted in slots of a bracket 16a so as to vary their distance apart. Adjustable collars 23 and 24, mounted on at least two of the rods, guide the ribbon laterally to the reel 10. The mandrel 8 and disc 7 may be replaced by a disc 26, Fig. 3 (not shown), having spikes adapted to penetrate the end of a drum on which the ribbon is wound, the disc 11 being provided in this case with holes to receive the spikes. In a modification, Fig. 6, the headstock 3 has an extension 29 carrying a length measuring device 30 operated by a roller 31 rotated by the ribbon 15. The ribbon 15 is pressed against the roller 31 by a spring- pressed roller 32. Ribbon 15 may be unwound from a reel on a second mandrel 9 carried by a shaft 35, Fig. 5 (not shown), and rewound after passage between the rollers 31 and 32, or after passage also around the rods 16, 17 and 18, in the latter case a jockey pulley is provided to hold the ribbon clear of the roller 31 as it passes down to the rods 16, 17 and 18.
