[Also in Group XVI] A breaker bar assembly for severing a moving web between two rollers comprises a bar movable into sliding frictional engagement with the web to impose tension on the part of the web which has advanced past the breaker bar to break the web between the bar and the roller on to which the web is being fed. As shown, a web W unwound from a parent roll passes through mechanism F where it is provided with evenly spaced transverse lines of perforations and then through mechanism G where it is slit longitudinally into strips, the strips being wound in the forms of rolls 24a &c. on to core sections 12a &c. which are traversed past a winding station D by means of a pair of endless chains 18. When each roll has been wound to the desired diameter, the end 76 of a camoperated pivotally-mounted breaker bar 72 is moved into engagement with the web to apply tension to the part of the web between the bar and the roll and thereby sever the web along a line of perforations. The rolls, as they are being wound, are driven by belts 30 passing round drums 32, 34, the shaft 36 of the drum 32 being rotatably mounted in bearings carried by cam-operated slide blocks 38 and the shaft 42 of the drum 34 being mounted in bearings carried by swingable brackets 44. The core sections 12a &c. are obtained by slitting cores 12 at station B, the core sections having adhesive applied thereto at section C.
